My experiments

I might be old news that privacy is dead – especially in these Snowdon times. I did a quick search on Vine for videos tagged #secret and off course there were tons. I’m thinking about making a simple frame around a monitor with headphones connected and letting it run the most resent videos tagged #secret – it’s quite fun (and weird) to watch them. The website would work a bit like this one called Vpeaker that shows the most resent Vines.

Here are some public videos tagged #secret (Note: the Instagram imbedder doesn’t play sound automatically so you have to turn it up:

One “problem” could be that not many of the posters a using this as a serious outlet it’s most fun and games – which is natural since it’s now anonymous…

Tags like “smile” and “song” also turn up some great results.

A last thought is that I could use the tags to control the order the videos are played. I could take a sentence and post the the most resent videos that uses the words from the sentence and post them in the right order …

I’m still not sure if I’ll be showing the #VENUSREBORN work at the final show – I still need to do a couple of second runs and it seems the midwife edition fell through. If I do show it, I will do it a a series of prints hanging together framed.

I gouess the best thing would be to start a new edition the following days and see where it takes me.

As mentioned before I would like to create at least one more project for the show. The projects I’ve been working on so far are solely focused on the act of participation and missing a deeper message. It was therefore great for me to see the Yoko Ono exhibition – a lot of her works were meant for active participation but had a lot of meaning even though they were only passively viewed. Refreshed by Ono’s Fluxus thinking I have these new ideas for a projects.

#1. Smile Collection Box.

A website that lets users donate their smile to a site on the internet. All the smiles could be projected onto a wall or to separate screens. I could also hijack Vine for this project because it’s nice if they are ‘alive’.

#2. Tell.

A website version of a confession box where users can tell a secret anonymously. The idea feels a bit old right now but there’s something in it.

#3. Artist Roulette

Like chat roulette but it’s performance artists performing for users. I would probably only be able to make it live for the show – and even that would be a lot of work.

#4. The Never Ending Canon

Using a sort of karaoke system users should record a verse of a well known canon song. The verse is looped and layered on top of the previous version and in the end you should have a massive canon.

#5. Pass It Down (or pass anything down)

Creating a custom tag for Vine and participants make a Vine where they receive an object from the top of the picture and pass it down to the bottom. When you scroll through a feed it should look like the pictures are connected.

Right now I’m opting for #1 for it’s simplicity or #4. because of its playfulness.

I was hoping to present my 3rd social media project at the second group presentation but due to some illness I am not yet ready to present it. Instead I have been working on ways to display the #ISEEFACES#ISEELEGS project that we talked about the last time. So this post is a follow up to my last group presentation.

After the very inspiring talk I had with you guys I contacted a VJ friend who does a lot of mapping and and another friend who is a programmer. Based on suggestions from both you and them (and some more research) I have a come up with a couple of different ways that I could display the work.

The whole idea of having mechanical rotating boxes with screens on them seems to expensive and technically difficult for me so I have landed on two options.

Option 1 is the mapping idea. For this I need to create a black full screen HTML website showing 4 boxes that pull feed from the original website (two “heads” and two “legs”). The pictures need to be skewed so they look like two sides of two boxes places on top of each other – when the viewer presses the back and forth buttons the pictures should make a transition that mimics a box that turns. The website is trapezed through a short range projector onto two white boxes mounted over each other. The transition on the website will make it look like the boxes turn though they are static. Though it is not perfect the effect can be very convincing. A problem is that I need a rather dark space.

The website

The projection

Option 2 is simply two screens (preferably touch screens) on a wall one over the other. Top screen with the “faces” feed and the bottom has the “legs” feed. I could build a front panel to hide the sides of the screens. If I can’t get touch screens I could place real buttons on the side and make a mega version of the real website.

Option 3 … The last option would be to choose the best faces and legs and put them together in a program like After Effects and then map them onto the boxes. This is easier programming wise but I loose interactivity.

Another project I’ve been working on is the “Let’s all photoshop Bryn”. You can read more here and here. The project fell into my lap and I’ve used it to test some of the mechanics of online participation. I don’t think it should be part of my final show.

A little further down the page you can read about my latest little personal project - the Lol-kat project. It’s related to my MA but only in the way that it’s about my fascination of internet culture. BUT It doesn’t use collaboration or crowd sourcing so it’s more of a side project..

I’ve tried creating some test images for my personal project today. I’m testing if I need to have my own face in the same environment as the original lolcat to make the strongest link.

I dis a quick photoshop mock up of both to see what works best, but I think I have to make more to decide.

The Bryn meme is flourishing with more than 70 different contributions and more people than anyone would imagine have joined in and photoshopped Bryn. A noteworthy thing is that though the meme has spread far and wide through Bryn’s social network it doesn’t seem to have spread beyond his own friends. The “Can someone please photoshop the sun between my fingers guy”  is very different in this way because contributions came from people he didn’t seem to know in person. I imagine that this of course has a lot to do with the difference in the social media platforms on which the two memes were started. The “sun guy” posted his call on the open forum Reddit, whilst the Bryn meme started as  a reaction from his friends to his profile picture on Facebook.

The phenomenon of seeing faces or images of bodies in physical objects is called pareidolia. The expression also covers hearing hidden messages in records (or even words in the screams of goats and barking dogs). According to Wikipedia, pareidolia is a kind of apophenia which is the experience of seeing meaningful patterns in random meaningless data (or objects?). Noteworthy examples of pareidolia include the man in the moon, animals in clouds and seeing Jesus in toasted bread

I’ve been looking for a word that describes what my #ISEEFACES#ISEELEGS project was about – so I am very happy to finally find one that is covering.

Look a Jesus cheeto!

A friend of mine posted a new profile picture to on Facebook two days ago and that made his wall go berserk. Someone noticed that his pose looked like he was pooping and yesterday creative hell broke loose!

The pooping remark resulted in someone posting this picture.

Which made my friend Jonas do a shout out: Everyone photoshop BRYN!

That made someone else post this picture

And when I woke up this morning and checked my friends wall the internet had done it’s thing!

The whole thing reminds me of the “Can someone please photoshop the sun between my fingers guy” from Reddit.

Update:

The Reddit image inspired me to do a GIF …

Update two:

Another friend, Sven, just created a Tumblr with all the pictures called  FOR HELVíTI which he asked me to help him manage.

I’ve done the brainstorm because I’m trying to come up with ideas for what may be the last project. The goal is to NOT use Instagram for my this one (though it is tempting) The aim of my brainstorm was to go through the most popular social networks and pinpoint relevant technologies and special user mentality and behavioral patterns.

Right now the only real idea I got from this is that I could do a social media canon (song) using e.g. SoundCloud. This idea could be fun but I think I will have to revisit this brainstorm again with fresh eyes later this week and see what other ideas I might get.

I really like lolcats (hence the name of the blog) and what they stand for, so when Ed Kelly sent me a link for a Lolcat exhibiton in London I was intrigued. The exhibition itself wasn’t exactly what I would like to do with lolcats as a theme, but thinking about it sparked an idea for a little personal project. The problem is it isn’t really social, but I feel it has some relvance to portraying internet culture through its memes.

My plan is to take picture of myself posing of famous lolcats and post them in separate section here on my website “lol-kat.com”. Simple.

Here are some of my all time favorites that I’ve picked out for now:

While this idea doesn’t involve collaboration it’s source material i crowd sourced. So in a way it fits into my MA, and in a way it really doesn’t. I’ve decided to make it no matter what, and figure out later if I’ll put it into the final exhibition.
