My process

For the show I will be running the iseefacesiseelegs.com website through a Processing app. The app will draw it’s data directly from the website (instead of Instagram). I had programmer Jonas help me build an administration system that lets me take out all the “wrong” images it’s pretty cool because it also lets me load more than 20 images at a time which was the maximum Instagram would return through the API.

Here’s how I select or deselect incoming pictures.

The point of the installation is that it is realtime so he system also lets me get a couple of new images from the website.

Vine has no official API which has made building a website for the confession piece a challenge. Jonas my programming friend who I’ve hired to help me build the sites has worked on it for hour on end but we had to go with the next best solution. The problem is that we can’t detect when a video is finished to automatically play the next. This means that we have set the website to play a video every length too 7 seconds (a Vine is about 6 seconds). This works fine on computers with a high speed Internet connection but not on mobile devices as iPads and iPhones which is a shame because my plan was to use an iPad for my installation. We also couldn’t adjust the size of the video and keep it center of the screen. This doesn’t really matter as the video will be playing behind a screen. For the show version Jonas has helped me build a version where I can adjust the size of the video and play length with parameters. Example: confessionchair.com/show/?milliseconds=9000&zoom=1.7. If you want to try you can change the parameters in the top and se how the result changes. (Load it in Firefox). The regular version of the website is this: confessionchair.com.

I’ve been working with a colleague who a agreed to help me learn processing all day today and yesterday. Yesterday we covered many of the basics so today we decided to try to work on something relevant for my MA project.

I really want to do a project with Vine, but since the app doesn’t have an API yet we had to try and work around that. The idea was to let users create a score that would play tags from Vine. Each user could add a tag by writing it in the program. This turned out to be more difficult than we hoped. We kept getting stuck.

After 6 hours of trying we had to stop because it just wasn’t working. Instead I will look into doing this in HTML or using Vine another way with HTML (* more about that further down).

Instead, we ended up creating a processing app for the Iseefaces#Iseelegs project. The programme does pretty much the same as the website but it lets the two pictures use the full size of the screen and flips them sideways so I can use ONE flatscreen monitor instead of two and hang it sideways – this way I only use one computer and one screen! Also we programmed it so it will work very well with the PowerMate buttons.

* My other idea for Vine is to take one of the following tags: secret, confession, song, shout or magic and let them load onto a HTML site like this one called VineViewer. If I choose #confession or #secret it could be nice to build a custom confession box and let the viewer act as a priest who sits on the other side listening. If I use  #magic I would simply let them play on a screen in an backward order with the most recents playing first. For #song or #shout the layout of VineViewer (which uses the custom Vine player) would be very effective because  it loads several videos at once and people may play the sound of many at a time creating a massive sound collage.

As mentioned before I would like to create at least one more project for the show. The projects I’ve been working on so far are solely focused on the act of participation and missing a deeper message. It was therefore great for me to see the Yoko Ono exhibition – a lot of her works were meant for active participation but had a lot of meaning even though they were only passively viewed. Refreshed by Ono’s Fluxus thinking I have these new ideas for a projects.

#1. Smile Collection Box.

A website that lets users donate their smile to a site on the internet. All the smiles could be projected onto a wall or to separate screens. I could also hijack Vine for this project because it’s nice if they are ‘alive’.

#2. Tell.

A website version of a confession box where users can tell a secret anonymously. The idea feels a bit old right now but there’s something in it.

#3. Artist Roulette

Like chat roulette but it’s performance artists performing for users. I would probably only be able to make it live for the show – and even that would be a lot of work.

#4. The Never Ending Canon

Using a sort of karaoke system users should record a verse of a well known canon song. The verse is looped and layered on top of the previous version and in the end you should have a massive canon.

#5. Pass It Down (or pass anything down)

Creating a custom tag for Vine and participants make a Vine where they receive an object from the top of the picture and pass it down to the bottom. When you scroll through a feed it should look like the pictures are connected.

Right now I’m opting for #1 for it’s simplicity or #4. because of its playfulness.

I’ve tried creating some test images for my personal project today. I’m testing if I need to have my own face in the same environment as the original lolcat to make the strongest link.

I dis a quick photoshop mock up of both to see what works best, but I think I have to make more to decide.

I really like lolcats (hence the name of the blog) and what they stand for, so when Ed Kelly sent me a link for a Lolcat exhibiton in London I was intrigued. The exhibition itself wasn’t exactly what I would like to do with lolcats as a theme, but thinking about it sparked an idea for a little personal project. The problem is it isn’t really social, but I feel it has some relvance to portraying internet culture through its memes.

My plan is to take picture of myself posing of famous lolcats and post them in separate section here on my website “lol-kat.com”. Simple.

Here are some of my all time favorites that I’ve picked out for now:

While this idea doesn’t involve collaboration it’s source material i crowd sourced. So in a way it fits into my MA, and in a way it really doesn’t. I’ve decided to make it no matter what, and figure out later if I’ll put it into the final exhibition.

I am planning a new run on my #venusreborn project. It seems like it would be good since:

A) It was actually never meant to be a standalone project,

and

B) As I mentioned earlier the new Instagram layout kinda broke the old project.

I have been debating with myself if I should choose another image for the next try but I think I will stick to the Birth of Venus. It is one of the most iconic images of all time and it has more details than many other famous paintings – also with a new image I would have to change the name = not good. So next thing I will have to create an invitation – I think it would be great if I could get enough participants without having to to special invitations. Off course a personal invitation could be a guarantee for quality submissions but it’s not as social as people joining out of interest. This dilemma is also important to me because I’ve been reading about Mail Art for my Research Paper and often Mail Art projects are very exclusive and invitation only.

Here is the layout for the next #venusreborn

Ok so I finally got the Instagram experiment started up.

For my first try I decided to invite specific people to join in – later on I am planning on creating one with random people.

The project will run Thursday/Friday this week and and everyone needs to tage their contribution with #venusreborn at the right time for it to work. Now I just hope that not to many people jump out in the last minute – or that someone forgets to post at the right time … Fingers crossed!!

Here is a screen dump of the schedule I sent the contributors.

I’ve played around with the sound of an egg frying. It’s more a test than a concept. A go at creating an emotion from soundclips that have nothing to do with to feeling I’m trying to create.

The feeling is eary and avantgarde :) And it might be a bit to long
