I decided to make my personal lolcat project the idea for my business card.
It pretty much says both Kat(rine) and social media – plus my website address is lolkat.com. Win.

Here’s a Nyan Kat for starters.

Yesterday the trial against Bradley Manning, Wikileaker and Nobel prize nominee, started. Bradley served in Iraq and during his time there leaked a massive number of secret files to Wikileaks and the public. Though it cannot be proved that Bradley’s actions have put any US soldiers in danger he stands to get a sentence of 20 years or even death for sharing the truth about the war to the public

The website iam.bradleymanning.org is a place to show your support online. You upload a photo of yourself holding a sign and the makers of the site will create a video using all the uploaded pictures.

I’ve tried creating some test images for my personal project today. I’m testing if I need to have my own face in the same environment as the original lolcat to make the strongest link.

I dis a quick photoshop mock up of both to see what works best, but I think I have to make more to decide.

The Bryn meme is flourishing with more than 70 different contributions and more people than anyone would imagine have joined in and photoshopped Bryn. A noteworthy thing is that though the meme has spread far and wide through Bryn’s social network it doesn’t seem to have spread beyond his own friends. The “Can someone please photoshop the sun between my fingers guy”  is very different in this way because contributions came from people he didn’t seem to know in person. I imagine that this of course has a lot to do with the difference in the social media platforms on which the two memes were started. The “sun guy” posted his call on the open forum Reddit, whilst the Bryn meme started as  a reaction from his friends to his profile picture on Facebook.

A friend of mine posted a new profile picture to on Facebook two days ago and that made his wall go berserk. Someone noticed that his pose looked like he was pooping and yesterday creative hell broke loose!

The pooping remark resulted in someone posting this picture.

Which made my friend Jonas do a shout out: Everyone photoshop BRYN!

That made someone else post this picture

And when I woke up this morning and checked my friends wall the internet had done it’s thing!

The whole thing reminds me of the “Can someone please photoshop the sun between my fingers guy” from Reddit.

Update:

The Reddit image inspired me to do a GIF …

Update two:

Another friend, Sven, just created a Tumblr with all the pictures called  FOR HELVíTI which he asked me to help him manage.

I really like lolcats (hence the name of the blog) and what they stand for, so when Ed Kelly sent me a link for a Lolcat exhibiton in London I was intrigued. The exhibition itself wasn’t exactly what I would like to do with lolcats as a theme, but thinking about it sparked an idea for a little personal project. The problem is it isn’t really social, but I feel it has some relvance to portraying internet culture through its memes.

My plan is to take picture of myself posing of famous lolcats and post them in separate section here on my website “lol-kat.com”. Simple.

Here are some of my all time favorites that I’ve picked out for now:

While this idea doesn’t involve collaboration it’s source material i crowd sourced. So in a way it fits into my MA, and in a way it really doesn’t. I’ve decided to make it no matter what, and figure out later if I’ll put it into the final exhibition.

You can’t really have a blog about social media art and phenomenas and not mention this meme: The Harlem Shake is spreading like wildfire across the Internet. This graph from an article on Mashable tells the story quite well.

This is the video that started all the racket …

… though this is the real original

I created a little Halloween tribute to the famous LOL-Cat Lemon Cat and it made it to the frontpage of KnowYourMeme.com! So proud, my first meme-version success!

I’ve really been enjoying the new meme that has been built up around the failed amateur restoration of the Ecce Homo mural in Centro de Estudios Borjanos in Borja, Spain. The humor is hard to miss and the woman behind the whole thing, Cecilia Giménez has become somewhat of a legend on the internet.

But now this little web app appeared. The Cecilia Prize, where you can create your own version of the Ecce Homo and submit it via Twitter. I think this is such a nice idea and the whole story really gets you thinking about what art is – because she might have ruined a valuable piece of art, but at the same time this so called amateur created something much more controversial and effective – and I can’t see why that isn’t art in some other form.

Also this project would have fit nicely into my MA had I only thought of it …

As a part of my practical research I have decided to contribute to some of the popular memes and creative co-creation projects online. All the projects will require different levels of engagement from me, and I hope this will give me a better picture of the level of participation I would like for my end project.

I’ve already done a few so I will post them here along with references. Also I have decided to create at least 3 contributions a week the following two weeks.

1. Lol Cats

Since Clay Shirky calls creating Lol Cats the lowest form of creative output in his book Cognitive Surplus – I thought I’d give that task a go. I must admit that I didn’t find it that easy. I know the formular (cute cat + badly spelled headline = Lol Cat). But coming up with a fun headline on commando is difficult. I chose to let my Lol cat reference another famous Lol Cat: Muffin Cat – thinking that it at least might give me some geek points ;)

In true spirit of the medium I found a Lol Cat generator that uses the right outlined font (Impact).

2. One Frame of Fame

I contributed to the One Frame of Fame music video a while ago so this is actually a re-post. The video is for C-Mon & Kypski’s song More is Less. Fans are invited to take part in the video by recreating a single frame with their web cam. So far 36498 people have contributed to the project.

3. Three Dreams of Black

Three Dreams of Black was another co-creation project I discovered on Osiris’ blog. It is created by Chriss Milk for who also is the director on the Johnny Cash Project. It is a Google Crome experiment that shows the possiblities of the WebGL coding language.

From the website:

“3 Dreams of Black” is an interactive film by Chris Milk and some friends at Google that showcases the creative potential of WebGL. WebGL is a context of the HTML5 canvas element that enables hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in the web browser without a plug-in. In other words, it enables your browser to show some really beautiful visuals. On this page, you’ll find a WebGL model viewer featuring several of the “3 Dreams of Black” creatures. You’ll also find 8 demos created by our development team, a link to the code base, and some links to resources on the web that will be useful for getting started in WebGL programming.

The website lets you build elements and add them to one the three “dreams” in the video. I had not planned to do this in advance so I ended up creating a very simple “K”.

Other users contributions:

4. Chubby Bubbles Girl

A friend resently reminded me about the Chubby Bubbles Girl meme. As a big Game of Thrones fan – I have just created a version starring a White Walker (So sorry for the spoiler).

The picture has also been uploaded to the Know your meme website, so I will be looking out for any comments!

Future plans:

At this point I know that that during the following weeks I also want to create contributions for Dear Photograph, The Johnny Cash Project  and create a cover for a Gregory Brothers song.
